Information on how to apply for each of our funds and their deadlines can be found below. All of our application forms are now online.  To apply, you will first need to create a login on our Grants Portal. You will be able to use your login to apply to any of the Charity’s funds.

Main Grants, Schools in Partnership and Small Grants Fund: First Steps

John Lyon’s Charity operates a two stage application process for requests under the Main Grants Fund, Schools in Partnership Fund and Small Grants Fund.

Stage One: Initial Proposal Letter

If you would like to apply to the Charity for a grant you need to write a letter (of approximately two sides of A4 in length) with the following information:

  • A summary of the main purpose of your project
  • Details of how much your project will cost in total
  • How much you are requesting from the Charity
  • The timescale of your project
  • What you will spend the Charity’s contribution on

For more information please see our guidelines for writing a good proposal letter. The proposal should then be submitted via our Grants Portal.

During the assessment of your proposal, a member of the Grants Team will be in contact with you and may request a site visit. We may also send your proposal to one of our Advisers, or arrange for an Adviser to visit you to discuss your proposal in more detail. We will accept Stage One proposals at any time.

Application Deadlines: Main Grants / Schools in Partnership

The following deadlines are the latest possible time that a proposal can be submitted. We strongly recommend that proposals are submitted at least six months in advance. Otherwise the Trustee may be unable to consider the application in time due to the limited capacity of each funding round.

The Grants Team will be in touch once we have received your Stage One Proposal. You must be invited by the Grants Team to proceed to Stage TwoPlease note: we are no longer accepting proposals for the June 2019 round.

Working in schools – we strongly recommend that schools/organisations working in schools submit proposals in time to be considered for the March Grants Round (i.e. the Stage One Proposal should be submitted by early November). If successful, the release of the grant would be in line with the beginning of the academic year.

Application Deadlines: Small Grants

We aim to consider Small Grants applications at least six times per year. Proposals can be submitted to the Charity at any time.

School Holiday Activity Fund

This is a one stage application process, so no proposal letter is needed. You can apply for the School Holiday Activity Fund (SHAF) online, using our Grants Portal. You will need to create a login to do so. Please make sure you keep your login details safe. Further information about the fund and its deadlines can be found here.

School Explorer Fund

This is a one stage application process, so no proposal letter is needed. You can apply for the School Explorer Fund online, using our Grants Portal. You will need to create a login to do so. Please make sure you keep your login details safe. Further information about the fund can be found here. We aim to consider School Explorer Fund applications at least six times per year.
